UNC–Chapel Hill offers Welcome to Carolina Blue, a required virtual orientation for all new permanent SHRA and EHRA Non-Faculty employees. The program is delivered via Zoom and provides an overview of the University’s programs, services, policies and benefits.
Sessions are typically held on Monday mornings throughout the year (excluding holidays or weather-related closures). Employees must complete orientation before beginning work.
Before Your Orientation Sessions
The Orientation Program Manager will email registered new hires the Thursday before their scheduled session. If you don’t see the email, check your spam or junk folder.
This email will include:
- New hire documents to review and sign during orientation
- Instructions for returning completed documents
- Guidance on accessing and using Zoom

After Your Orientation Session
Following the session, you will report to your work location or connect with your department. Your department will continue the onboarding process by orienting you to your position.

Human Resources Consultants and Representatives must register new faculty for orientation.
Faculty Registration System Access
Faculty Attending Orientation On Their Hire Date
If a Faculty member attends New Employee Orientation on their hire date, the OHR I-9 unit will complete the Form I-9 on behalf of the hiring department as long as the Faculty attends the full orientation program (8:30 a.m.- 1 p.m.) and the hiring department HR Representative completes the following actions by noon on the Wednesday prior to orientation:
- Registers the Faculty member for NEO
- Fully executes the hire ePAR in ConnectCarolina
- Sends the LawLogix I-9 invitation
Faculty Attending Orientation After Their Hire Date
If a faculty member attends NEO following the effective date of hire, the hiring department will continue to be responsible for ensuring that the Form I-9 is completed correctly and timely.

Next Steps Following Orientation
After your first day, you’ll complete your W-4 and NC-4 forms through the
ConnectCarolina portal under the
SelfService tab. These forms determine your federal and state tax withholdings.
You can update:
- Number of allowances
- Additional withholding amounts
- Marital status
- Exempt status
Note: If you are classified as a Non-Resident Alien for tax purposes, you must contact Payroll Services at payroll@unc.edu.
